New York City
Live Music/Social Events

I am going to be visiting New York City later this month and will be attending two performances of contemporary bands which play authentic 1920s and 1930s style popular music.  I have decided to invite Radio Dismuke listeners who will be in the area at the time to attend the performances with me.   In addition to hearing some great music, this will provide me with an opportunity to meet some of my station's listeners and for everyone to meet and interact with other 1920s and 1930s music enthusiasts.

Thursday April 22

The Blue Orchid Dance Orchestra
Michael Arenella's  Blue Orchid Dance Orchestra is an 11 piece ensemble specializing in 1920s American and British hot dance band music.  The band's authentic arrangements are transcribed by Arenalla from vintage 78 rpm performances.   The band provides a rare opportunity to hear what those wonderful but low fidelity recordings sounded like live.

The performance will be held at Swing 46 located in the theatre district at 349 W 46th Street (between 8th and 9th Avenues).  There is an entertainment cover charge of $10 per person.  I plan to be there at about 7:30.  For those interested, Swing 46 will offer a dance lesson at 8:00.  The band will play from 8:30 to 11:30.

If you are interested in attending this event, please see the contact and RSVP instructions below.

Monday April 25

Vince Giordano's Nighthawks
Vince Giordano's Nighthawks is one of the better known contemporary but authentic 1920s/1930s style dance bands.   Recently the band was prominently featured in the soundtrack of the film The Aviator and has a number of CDs to its credit.

The performance will be held at Charlie O's Times Square Grill located at 1611 Broadway (at 49th Street).   The table for Radio Dismuke attendees is reserved for 7:45.  This performance is expected to be sold out so it is very important that those who are interested in attending this event get in contact with me so that I can make sure that I am able to reserve extra seats early or, if necessary, give back any extras that I have already reserved that might not be used.   Please see  the contact and RSVP instructions below.

There IS a cover charge for this event - but unfortunately, as I type this, I do not have the specific amount.  I will update this page as soon as I find out.

Important
Contact and RSVP Information

Here is some important information that those interested in attending either of these performances will need to know.

  • I am told that the Thursday Blue Orchid Dance Orchestra event at Swing 46 is not likely to be sold out and that reservations are not necessary.   I would, however, appreciate it if those who think that they might be able to attend would let me know so I have an idea of how many people to expect and can, therefore, try to make arrangements for the group to sit together.    Please send an email to me at NYC@dismuke.org    Using this address will reduce the risk of your message being swallowed up by the spam filters I must have in place on my other email accounts as well as make it easier for me to see.
  • The Vince Giordano event Monday night at Charlie O's Times Square Grill is expected to be sold out.  I already have a block of seats reserved for the event.  If you plan on attending this event, it is important that you let me know as soon as possible so that I can make sure to hold a seat for you and, if necessary, reserve some additional seats before the show sells out.  If you are not 100% sure that you will be able to make it,  let me know that you might be attending.  It will be a lot easier for me to give an extra seat back than to reserve another one at the last minute.   Please direct your RSVP email to NYC@dismuke.org
  • Because it is possible that things can change between now and then, I am putting up a section on my Message Board where I can provide updated information and people can ask questions.
  • I do not get up to New York City very often, so if you are coming in from outside the area, I am not your best source of information on where to stay or how to get around in the city.  But you are welcome to post any such questions on the Message Board and perhaps a listener from the area will see them and be able to provide you with answers.
  • If you have any  questions regarding the events, use the NYC@dismuke.org address.
