Special Note 10/30/08
As has been obvious, updates have been rather few and far between over
the past couple of months. Things have been busy and I have been
distracted with other matters.
I do enjoy putting the updates together and it is my desire and
intention to for them to continue. They are, however, time
consuming and there are periods when my free time is either very limited
or when there are other things of value to me competing for it.
As a result, there are going to be periods when I will end up missing an
occasional update or when I will even go a few weeks between updates.
Given my time limitations, the only other alternative for me would be to
discontinue the updates altogether - something which I do not
wish to do.
Generally speaking, it is easier for me to maintain regular updates
when I can find the time to put together several weeks worth in advance
- something which I am hoping to do this upcoming weekend. |

Until
Love Comes Along
Nat Shilkret And The Victor Orchestra
1930
(Victor 22266-A)
Here are a couple of recordings
by two of the more prolific bands on 1920s Victor records.
Roger Wolfe Kahn was the son of
wealthy financier and Metropolitan Opera chairman Otto Kahn.
He formed his band at age 16 and was 18 years old when he recorded this
week's selection. His family's wealth enabled him to staff his band
with some of the era's top jazz musicians.
I first heard this recording of
"Mountain Greenery" played by Rich Conaty on his program The
Big Broadcast and found it to be very catchy. Recently, I finally
obtained my own copy. The song is a Richard Rogers - Lorenz Hart
composition and was originally performed in the 1926 version of the Broadway
revue The Garrick Gaieties.
I did not care much for the selection
on the flip side of "Mountain Greenery" so I chose to instead include a
recording from a Nat Shilkret record I obtained at the same time.
The song "Until Love Comes Along" was introduced by Bebe Daniels
in the 1930 Radio Pictures film Love Comes Along.

EXTRA
This section will present
78 rpm recordings that do not fall within the range of the vintage pop
and jazz fare that I usually present. Here I will feature
recordings from a wide variety of eras, musical genres and nationalities
as well as occasional spoken word recordings.

Da

Here are two very charming recordings
by the great Austrian tenor, Richard Tauber. I consider myself
to be a fan of his recordings and always pick them up whenever I see them
available at reasonable prices.
